Church Notes: female Benedictine priory here founded 11thC, known as 'monastère Sainte-Perpétue', today 'abbaye de La Celle'; the church of the monastery, built ca.1160 and dedicated to St. Mary, replaced the former parish church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which had become a wreck, ca. 1800, with all furnishings being transferred to it [source: Eglise catholique du Var, Diocèse Fréjus-Toulon [www.diocese-frejus-toulon.com/La-Celle-eglise-Notre-Dame-de-l.html] [accessed 27 January 2017]] -- the remains of the abbey are listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00081575]
Listed by Corblet (1881-1882) simply as a Romanesque font in "Lacelle", Var. Lasteyrie (1929) describes it as one of many such vat-like fonts from the 11th and 12th centuries, this one ornamented with simple mouldings.
