Font Notes:
Corblet (1881-1882) describes this font as being an ancient vat from Roman times, elliptical in shape and made of porphyry, which has a tiger's head and two large rings as ornamentation on its front side. Jolin (2001) describes the font as a former bath-tub from the Roman terme. made of dark red porphyry, and ornamented with rings and lion heads. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM57000152]: "Fonts baptismaux (cuvette des fonts baptismaux) [...] Porphyre [...] H = 92 ; l = 295 ; pr = 156 (Dimension au bord supérieur) ; Dimensions au pied : l = 213, pr = 98. Hauteur intérieure : h = 61 [...] Bas-côté nord, extrémité ouest [...] Pas [sic] sa forme, cette cuve romaine fait penser à une grande baignoire [...] Si l'origine romaine de la cuve ne fait pas de doute, sa provenance reste cependant incertaine. La forme fait supposer qu'elle ait servi aux thermes publics. La présence ininterrompue de la cuve dans la cathédrale est attestée depuis des siècles, de même sa destination comme fonts baptismaux jusqu'à une époque assez récente.
