Grenoble No. 2 / Grenoblo

INFORMATION

FontID: 03529GRE
Church/Chapel: Cathédrale Notre-Dame
Church Patron Saints: St. Mary the Virgin
Church Location: Place Notre Dame, 38000 Grenoble, France
Country Name: France
Location: Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Directions to Site: the cathedral is located in the northern part of the old town, just S of the river
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocèse de Grenoble-Vienne
Historical Region: Dauphiné
Century and Period: 15th century, Late Medieval
Listed by Corblet simply as a 15th-century font (Corblet, 1881-1882, v. 2, p. 129). On-site visit: no trace was found of this font or another -tub-shaped- font listed in Corblet either, nor could anyone present account for their whereabouts, although it may very well be hidden in some storage area of the cathedral; the cathedral, and especially the church of St-Hugues, will have to undergo a lot of renovation and its objects much sorting before some light is thrown on this and other such issues. [NB: an odd-looking baptismal font (?) with a pyramidal cover is located near the entrance to St-Hugues, but it has all the appearances of being a 19th-century object - cf. Index entry for Grenoble No. 4]
