Described in Corblet as a large oblong basin, about 100 cm deep, with rounded angles, vertical sides, a flat bottom and a drain, much like a bath-tub. Corblet suggests that it may have been the basin of the ancient baptistery of the cathedral (Corblet, 1881-1882, v. 2, p. 129). On-site visit: no trace was found of this font, nor could anyone present account for its whereabouts, although it may very well be hidden in some storage area of the cathedral; the cathedral, and especially the church of Saint-Hugues, will have to undergo a lot of renovation and its objects much sorting before some light is thrown on this and other such issues. [NB: an odd-looking baptismal font (?) with a pyramidal cover is located near the entrance to Saint-Hugues, but it has all the appearances of being a 19th-century object - cf. Index entry for Grenoble No. 4]
