Corblet (1881-1882) argues that an immersion basin of the 11th century had a "sorte de cuvette" attached at a later date, when baptism by affusion was practised, to collect to the ground the water which had already made contact with the baptizand's head [cf. many double fonts in France, especially in Brittany, which have either two full basins or a smaller one for the said purpose; also, the English font at Yulgreave].
