Scene Description: Source caption: "St Swithin's, Church Lane, Sproatley. The small, much decayed medieval church was taken down in December 1819, and a larger church built on its site, rebuilding complete in 1820. The new edifice was initially dedicated to All Saints but, by 1840, it had reverted to St Swithin. In 1885-86 most of the church was taken down and rebuilt again in a 15th-century style"

There are four multiple-place entries for Sproatley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TA1934/sproatley/] [accessed 29 October 2019] none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York East Riding, vol. 7, 2002) notes: "Sproatley church had been built by the earlier 12th century. [...] The church was dedicated to ST. SWITHIN by the early 13th century. [...] Little is known about the medieval church. Its steeple was recorded in 1552 [...] The old church was said to have been 'lately taken down' in December 1819, [...] and rebuilding was complete in 1820. Services were held in the interim in an old schoolroom in the rectory house. [...] The new church was apparently dedicated to ALL SAINTS, but by 1840 it seems once again to have been ST. SWITHIN'S. [...] A stone font, in the form of a small bowl on a baluster support, was evidently fixed in the rebuilt church c. 1820, replaced in 1879, [...] and then used as an ornament in the garden of the rectory house, later the Old Rectory, where it remained in 1999." The VCH entry further notes that a plaque on the present font accounts for the font replacement in 1879. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original church here].
