Church Notes: The original church dates from 1081; the nave of the upper church was pull down in 1803, so the transept is now at the west end. Although much of the original curch estructure has been changed, there are wonderful capitals remaining from the Romanesque period and the crypt, the "oldest religious bulding in Saintonge" is an "exact replica of the choir above" and houses a 4th?/6th? century sarcophagus with the relics of St-Eutrope. (a/p France: a Phaidon Cultural Guide (1985, p. 667). The crypte is really a funerary basilica dating originally to the 11th-century fundation of the church.
In the crypt of the church of St-Eutrope there is, next to the old well from which water is said to have been drawn for the early baptisms, a large cylindrical stone vessel said to be a font of the 11th century. Noted and illustrated in De Caumont (1854) as a baptismal font in the crypt of St-Eutrope, where it appears mounted on a single moulded pedestal base. Ruprich-Robert (1855) mentions a noteworthy font here, without further details. Described in some detail and illustrated in Bourricaud (1880); this author notes that the font had already been featured in two earlier sources in 1844 (Séances générales tenues en 1844, Société française pour la conservation des monuments historiques) and in De Caumont [cf. supra]. Bourricaud (ibid.) provides two illustrations that show the font differently displayed: one reprints De Caumont's engraving of 1854, in which the font is displayed as having a single foot; the second, which, Bourricaud informs, was executed by L. Giraudeau -and it is indeed so signed- shows the font raised on a double base [cf. infra] [NB: we do not know for certain whether the font was monopode in 1854, although it does not apear to have been altered from its original footing; was it De Caumont's error?]. Noted in Corblet (1881-1882). Lewis (1887) notes: "A large font in the south transept [of the crypt or lower church] shows by its size to how late a period the practice of baptizing by immersion lasted." Lasteyrie (1929) describes the base as three short supports ornamented with mouldings, and warns about the misleading view in De Caumont's illustration (in his Abécédaire, p. 311) which makes the base appear as monopode. The Dictionnaire des églises... (1966- ) describes it simply as a Romanesque baptismal font "en forme de vasque circulaire". Crozet (1971) mentions the size of this font and the multiple perforations around it and wonders if this would not be the "lavabo" fountain from the old Clunic cloister which used to exist by the south of the church. The Palissy database has an entry [référence PM17000466] for a 11th-century stone baptismal font at St-Eutrope, that is presumably meant for this object. On-site notes: it appears that Crozet's observation on the possibility of this object not being originally a font, but a cloister fountain is well founded; not only are there multiple lateral drainage holes at the lower side of the basin, but the surface of the bottom of the inner well is also convex, a design that suits the function of the fountain, but never found in a baptismal font. Local lore has that this object was often used as a 'lavabo' by the pilgrims passing through Saintes on their way to Santiago de Compostela, which would have never been allowed should the object had been a baptismal font. [NB: we have no evidence of this object ever having been used as baptismal font].
