Font Notes:
The fragment of the basin of an ancient baptismal font is reported in an article of 16 May 1869, CONTROVERSE ARCHÉOLOGIQUE SUR LES ORIGINES DE L'ÉGLISE DE CHIVY [http://cdn1_4.reseaudespetitescommunes.fr/cities/932/documents/agixl8czl4vtg8g.pdf] [accessed 4 April 2025]. The description and some of the inferences nade in the article are interesting to read today: "M. [NB: the Fleury text above appears to be an Extrait du "Bulletin de la Société académique de Laon". T. XVIII, Les chapiteaux mérovingiens de l'église de Chivy, by Édouard Fleury (1815-1883) [Permalink: ./index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=2569] -- we were unable to locate the illustration that is mentioned in Fleury's text]. Corblet (1881-1882, v. 2, p. 119) mentions that this font is from the 11th century and that it has a "monstre fantastique", although the illustration he provides shows a couchant lion facing right, supposedly on the basin side. A fragment of a baptismal font from Chivy-lès-Etouvelles that includes an animal [cf. supra] is illustrated in Mémoire [https://pop.culture.gouv.fr/notice/memoire/AP02W07095] [accessed 4 April 2025]: "Fonts baptismaux (fragment), vue générale [...] 11e siècle"; the fragment appears to have been built into a wall in the photograph.
