Scene Description: Source caption: " The Romanesque parish church of Saint Cadfan housing St Cadfan's Stone dating from the eighth or ninth century. The earliest parts of the building date to the twelfth century, and it originally had a central tower, although this fell down in 1693. The church houses two fourteenth-century monuments. One of the effigies is of an unknown priest in full Eucharistic vestments. The other is a military figure thought to be Gruffudd ab Adda (1350). The effigy is known as the 'Crying Knight' due to a flaw in the stone at his right eye which becomes damp during wet weather, giving the impression of weeping."

The Archaeologia Cambrensis: The Journal of the Cambrian Archoeological Association vol. XIV, 1897, 5th series, p. 160, lists an illustration of a baptismal font in Towyn, Merionethsire. The entry for this Towyn in the RCAHM's An Inventory of the Ancient Monuments in Wales and Monmouthshire, VI. County of Merioneth, (London: HMSO, 1921, p. 170 and fig. 23) notes: "the nave and aisles and some portion of the north transept date from the period 1150-1200 [...] The font is Norman, 2 feet 10 inches high" [NB: the dating of the font as Norman in the RCAHM does not match the illustration included in the entry, which would more likely be dated as late-medieval [cf. infra]. The listing for this church in the CDAW [https://cadwpublic-api.azurewebsites.net/reports/listedbuilding/FullReport?id=4642] [accessed 26 December 2019] notes: "A cruciform church in C19 Gothic style built around the core of a C12 church [...] The square font is chamfered at the angles, stands on a squat octagonal stem and square base, and is late medieval. Square mounted font; the basin is square but has the corners trimmed. The stem of the base is round and has a prominent torus at its middle. The lower base is chamfered and the plinth is square. There is no ornamentation except for a trimming of the corners of the lower base into a wide beak-like spur motif .
