Noted, with an engraving by J. Basire, in Gough (1792), as similar to the font at Charsfield, "and on the shaft a dog, wolf, and lions supporting it." The font is also of a similar design to the one in Norwich St. John's [cf. Index entry for Norwich No. 4]: octagonal basin with deeply carved panels showing alternatively lions and angels holding charged shields; the underbowl chamfer has two levels: the upper has cherubs at the angles while the lower is decorated with square flowers; octagonal stem with sedente animals [cf. supra] and buttresses; plain octagonal lower base and plinth. [NB: Paley gives "Leveringham" as one of the cognate fonts of the one at Norwich St John's [cf. Index entry for Norwich no. 4]; however, Crockford's Clerical Directory does not list the name of this town, nor did we find it in the available geographical sources -- there is a "Letheringham" in Suffolk, but we have not been able to ascertain that this font is the one from Letheringham St. Mary's]
