There is an entry for [Abbot's] Langley in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL0902/abbots-langley/] [accessed 21 September 2016]; it mentions a priest but not a church in it, though there must have been one there. Octagonal mounted font in the Decorated style, dated to the late 14th century by Paley (1844), who notes some details of its use: "Within these few years [ca. 1844?] it has been covered with a stone slab, in which is inserted a questionable looking basin of rather large dimensions, having a water-plug; the cover is of similar character". The Victoria County History (Hertfordshire, vol. 2, 1908) notes: "The architectural history of the church cannot be taken back to an earlier date than the last quarter of the twelfth century. […] The font is of the fifteenth century with octagonal panelled bowl and stem. On the bowl are the evangelistic symbols in quatrefoils alternating with shields, which have been painted in modern times." Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Hertforshire (1911): "Font: with octagonal panelled bowl and stem, bearing traces of paint and gilding, 15th century." Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1977): "Font. Octagonal, Perp[endicular], with shields inside quatrefoils (in two panels coursely carved angels instead)." The eight sides of the basin have quatrefoil frames which have the symbols of the Evangelists alternating with blank shields. The underbowl is chamfered and the octagonal stem of the base has a blind arcade of Gothic arches, while the lower part of the base has two mouldings. The plinth is octagonal as well and there remains a staple on the upper rim of the basin from the old font cover.
