Church Notes: "Early English cross church, of uniform style throughout" (Paley, 1844, unpaged)
Described and illustrated in Paley (1844): "remarkable for the beauty and simplicity of its design, is of pure Early English character." Illustrated in Anderson (1864). The font is an octagonal block with a deeply recessed blind arcade of rounded trefoil arches. Paley identifies the material as sandstone and cites the Rev. E.H. Wainwright as source (ibid.). Noted in Timmins (1899): "Near the porch we observe an elegant font, with small, well moulded arches supporting it." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy baptismal font of the Early English period. Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a later font in which the tub-like design of the Norman period persisted, now into an ornamented Early English octagonal font. Described in Newman & Pevsner (2006).
