Font Notes:
Described in Hutter (1829): "The font is very ancient, being a square stone cistern of ample dimensions, resting on four small round pillars, one at each angle, with a large one in the centre." Described in Paley (1844) as "plain, but rather unusual, Early English font. It consists of a square bowl [NB: it is actually rectangular, 75 x 70 cm], the angles of which are chamfered, and each side ornamented with a pointed trefoil arch". Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as an Early English baptismal font "of a rather unusual character". Kelly's Directory of 1883 reports a font, without further details. Wade & Wade (1929) report a font in this church. Described in Pevsner (1958): "Of c. 1300, square bowl with blank trefoiled pointed arch-heads, the stem a strong central shaft and four slimmer Purbeck shafts." The slender corner shafts have capitals and bases. The stone type of the four outer support columns are otherwise identified in Donovan & Reid (1962-1963): "TICKENHAM. There are Blue Lias shafts to the outer doorway of the south porch which appears to be well developed work of the 13th century. The four shafts to the font c. 1300 are also of this stone." [NB: the 19th-century font at Woolhope is said to have been designed based on this font, while the pulpit at Woolhope was designed after the font at Ewerby (Henry Woodyer, 2002: 52n)]
