Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary Magdalene Church, Gillingham. It is believed that as early as the 7th century a village was established on this site. There would have been a church of wooden construction but the present church is all that marks the site. In the 12th century a palace for the Archbishops of Canterbury was built here covering over 20 acres but this was suppressed at the Reformation in 1537 and only the church remained. The church is Perpendicular from the outside but there are arches in the interior dating from about 1200. The church was restored in the 1860s."

A drawing of the font by Thomas Fisher, probably done in the early 1800s, is entered in the Catalogue of Drawings & Museum Objects of the Society of Antiquaries of London [http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/specColl/SoA_images/detail.cfm?object=1413] [accessed 13 January 2008] [NB: is this the same drawing as identified in the British Library with "Image ID: R5HDAY" and dated "26 June 1788"?]. The drawing includes basic measurements and is captioned: "Font. Of one block of yellow stone; not a true circle". Described and illustrated in Paley (1844): Norman cylindrical font; the basin side has a blind arcade of round arches; below it there is a narrow band of chevron motif all around; the lowert part is slightly chamfered; the plinth is modern and, in Paley's words, "very inappropriate in form" (ibid.). Knight (1867) reports "a circular Norman font" in this church. Noted in Glynne (1877) as cylindrical Norman. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy baptismal font of the Norman period. Noted in Newman (1980): "Font. Norman. Deep circular stone bowl round which run sixteen arches on shafts. Interlocked zeds round the top, zigzag at the bottom." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TQ7820868837] notes: "Church. Early C13 chancel and side chapels, nave rebuilt C15, C15 aisles and tower, restored 1868-9C11 Norman font, with 16-arch arcade on shafts and zig zag moulding." [cf. also the entry for No. 2 in this Index for a Perpendicular font in the same town]
