animal - mammal - dog or fox - passant
animal - mammal - hare - regardant - with wind instrument
Scene Description: The "musical" hare appears to be chased by the dog or fox on the previous side of the basin, but stares back [unconcerned?] at it in a regardant position; the instrument resembles a French 'serpent' rather than the more common variety.

Octagonal basin sits on a later bulbous upper base and a square lower base. An inscription runs across the upper border of the basin; on the sides there is fleur-de-lis, oak and acanthus leaf motifs; on another, a rabbit or hare holds a wind instrument resembling a trumpet or trombone; behind it, a dog or fox; another side contains the stylised representation of two ermines. This combination of ermine and fleur-de-lis is, according to Le patrimoine des communes d'Ille-et-Vilaine (2000), an indication that this church was under the suzerainty of the Duchy of Brittany and the Crown of France. The same source informs that the basin is originally from a chapel at Montmuran. Listed also in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966- ). The original listing of 23 november 1948 in the Inventaire 1985-1986 by C. Dréan and J.J. Rioult includes the text of the inscription: "[?] ce [?] fut fait l'an Mil quatre cts L et VIII [?]" [NB: the question marks correspond to non-letter signs: the initial and closing ones resemble a large S, the third one resembles an arrow with both ends pointed]
