Font Notes:
Illustrated and annotated by Malle (1984): the font was made in 1903 by Shanovsky and it is in the style of earlier fonts, with an octagonal basin and a five-column base (broad central column and four peripheral colonnettes) all mounted on a huge octagonal plinth with two levels; one of the sides of the basin has a human head on it; otherwise the sides are plain except for a patterned upper rim. The bronze cover is dome-shaped with two levels and the crane mechanism that serves to raise and lower it has a large winged angel holding the finial, the work of Gasq. [NB: although this font would fall outside of the chronological scope of this Index on account of its late date, it is nevertheless included because it belongs in the best tradition of magnificent baptismal fonts].
