Vivier-Seguin (1941) describe this font as one of the most beautiful Renaissance fonts of the Manche; the basin is rounded with a slightly prominent upper rim ornamented with a band of crenellation below it; there is a band of curled foliage motifs underneath followed down by a rib-like arrangement forming the lower side and the underbowl. The base is a pedestal console with a cross base, each of the sides has an animal muffle at top and a lion claw motif at the bottom. V-S mention several "theories" about the origin of the font, including one which would make it a gift of a local abbey; they also refer to Montier's report that the local tradition had the coat of arms of the d'Harcourt family somewhere on the font, but there is no evidence to uphold either theory (Vivier, 1941); there are four coat of arms under the rim. The original basin was turned into a double-well by an insertion of a vertical marble divider. The lid is a flat brass (?) sheet cut in half and hinged so that it opens up on both sides. The entry for this church in the French Wikipedia [https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte] [accessed 28 March 2025] notes: "fonts baptismaux datés de 1572".
