Church Location: Pl. de la Mairie, 50740 Carolles, France
Country Name: France
Location: Manche, Normandie
Directions to Site: Carolles is located at the confluence of roads D61, D261 and D911, on the coast, about 20 km NW of Avranches

Century and Period: 14th century [basin only] [composite font], Medieval [composite]
Church Notes: present church 16thC; modified 17th, 18th and 20thC
Reported by Vivier-Seguin (1941) as perhaps Romanesque: the rectangular basin has relief disks resembling pellets distributed irregularly around. The base has four curved columns reported to be of much later date, probably the 18th century [cf. infra]. The entry for this font in Palissy [ref.: PM50000567] notes: "Fonts baptismaux [...] Granite [...] La cuve est d'époque médiévale (14e-15e siècles), et les supports d'époque 1750." Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: AP50W01108] [https://www.pop.culture.gouv.fr/notice/memoire/AP50W01108] [accessed 4 August 2022]. The baptismal font is noted in the Mairie de Carolles web site [https://www.carolles.fr/histoire-et-patrimoine.html] [accessed 4 August 2022]: "Les fonts baptismaux remontent au XIIe siècle, ils sont constitués par une cuve carrée en granit montée sur quatre pieds et dont la paroi extérieure présente des reliefs arrondis." [NB: the two sides we can see in the source photographs have different motifs; one, as indicated in the Carolles source above, is filled with [10?] circles, while tha other has two irregular depressions that may have meant to represent arches or windows]. The wooden cover is flat, a frame with a trap door opening up to give access to the interior of the basin; appears modern.
