Medieval baptismal font listed in Palissy [ref.: PM50000797]: "Fonts baptismaux d'époque romane." On-site notes: the crypt at the church of Orval [it has no access from the inside of the church; it has it own side door] houses two abandoned vessels: one is probably the font illustrated in Vivier-Seguin (1941) as having fluting ornamentation on the upper half of the basin, framed up and down by a roll moulding. V-S point out that it was done imitating a wooden vat, a common shape in early Romanesque fonts. The font is the work of an unskilled carver. Although Vivier-Seguin suggest a 11th or 12th centuty date, we would suggest, at least, 13th century. V-S date the short base on which it now [ca. (1941] stands to a later date (Vivier, 1941). The second vessel in the damp crypt, now open to all airs, is an irregular stoup which has a square basin and an octagonal base. On-site notes: there is also a later font, probably Victorian; it is an oval pedestal font quite similar to the ones made in the area in the 16th century and on.
