There is an entry for this Mutford [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TM4888/mutford/] [accessed 25 November 2024]; it reports "2 churches. 0.35 church lands" in it. Noted in Suckling (1846-1848): "The octagonal font, which is now despoiled of its ancient sculptures, was the gift of Dame Elizabeth, the wife of Sir Thomas de Hengrave, who lived in the reign of Richard II [i.e., 1377-1399], and his sucessor." Suckling (ibid.) also reports that, at the time of the Domesday Survey, in 1086, "Two churches were then standing in the parish"; the present church remaining, adds Suckling, "which is dedicated to St. Andrew, [...] was originally raised in Norman times". In Parker (1855) with similar information. Knott (2009) notes that the date of the donation, 1380, appears together with the name of the donor on "a surviving inscription on the font" [NB: it is actually on the upper step of the plinth]. Betjeman (1958) gives: "15th-cent[ury] font", as does Cautley (1982). We do not have any information on the carving off of the basin panels; the font is otherwise a typical example of the East Anglia Perpendicular design, whether it had Evangelists symbols and shields in them, or the more common combination of seated lions and shields; the angles of the basin are decorateed with the usual buttresses found on this type of font; the underbowl chamfer has two levels, with cherubs at the angles of the upper level, and human heads on the pabels of the lower level; the heads are male and female, individualised and varied in hair style, head-dress, etc.; the pedestal base, again, typical of the East Anglia font design: octagonal-to-square in shape, with four seated lions at the angles alternating with four selnder buttresses; the font stands on a two-step octagonal plinth, the upper step decorated with four quatrefoils on each side. [NB: we have no information on the earlier fonts from the two churches that existed here in the 11th century].
