There are two entries for Caister [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG5112/caister/] [accessed 28 May 2014], neither of which mentions a church or cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The town was divided into 2 parishes, Castor Trinity, and Castor St. Edmund. [...] Caster St. Edmund Is a rectory [...] The church has a nave, south isle and chancel covered with lead, and a square tower with 3 bells." The earliest dated reference to this church in Blomefield (ibid.) is in relation to the presentation of its first recorded rector: "1303, Martin de Rye, presented by Sir Hugh Bardolf." The church may however existed well before that date. The present font here is noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 as "a font exhibiting very curious sculpture". Cox & Harvey (1907): "At Ca[i]stor near Norwich, the font has this inscription round the base -- Orate p' fratribus et sororibus ac benef'toribus gilde sci iohis baptiste de castre". Described and illustrated in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Given by Richard de Caistor while he was vicar of St. Stephen, Norwich, between 1402 and 1419. Octagonal with four lions against the stem, four demi-figures of angels and the signs of the four Evangelists against the bowl. The angels hold shields with the emblem of the Trinity, the Instruments of the Passion, and three crowns and three chalices. Eight angel heads against the underside. The plinth has quatrefoils to each facet and a black-letter inscription referring to the Guild of St. John Baptist at Caistor." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2007)
