Scene Description: Source caption: "Der Taufstein in der Katharinen- bzw. Taufkapelle des Stephansdoms in der österreichischen Bundeshauptstadt Wien. Das 14-seitige Taufbecken aus rot-braunem Salzburger Marmor mit einem achteckigen Sockel wurde von 1476 bis 1481 vermutlich von dem Steinmetzen Ulrich Auer gefertigt. An dem darüber befindlichen reichgeschnitzten siebeneckigen Holzdeckel werden die sieben Sakramente dargestellt."

Church Notes: original 1137 church believed built on a 4thC cemetery, with many changes and re-buildings through the centuries
Illustrated in Lallov (1934: 92) as a baptismal font of the 15th century, the Late Gothic period;on the dodecagonal basin, each rectangular panel of the sides contains a niche with the standing figure of one of the twelve Apostles, as well as those of Christ and of St. Stephen, the patron of the church; the octagonal base has the figures of the Four Evangelists. The heptagonal wooden font cover is said to have been originally the sounding board of the pulpit, later re-cycled as cover; the lower main body has scenes of the Seven Sacraments, and the finial is a scene of the Baptism of Christ.
