Church Notes: original monastery here ca. 6thC; housed the monks escaping from Landevennec early 10thC; church re-built 12thC; re-built late-15th-16thC; became parish church after the Revolution
The basin is a plain square block of limestone, with no ornamentation at all, not even a moulding or incision [an oddity considering the affluence of this community in the 13th century and later in the 17th century], unless its sides were trimmed off during the religious wars. The four corner columns, on the other hand, are elegant with capitals and bases; the wider central column is a plain cylinder, as is common in these five-column fonts. The basin well was partitioned at a later date into two halves by inserting a vertical divider in its centre. The wooden lid is rather ornate for this area of France. The font is listed by Enlart (1902) as a 13th century Marquise font. Illustrated in Ronse (1929: fig. 26) and described as having a "silhouette de l'école Tournaisienne du XIIe siècle", while noting that the colonnettes and the basin denote a later period. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM62001090]: "Calcaire oolithe [...] 13e siècle".
