Listed by Enlart (1902) as a 12th century Marquise font on a 5-support base, ornamented with animals and plants inside circles. Listed and illustrated in Palissy [ref.: PM62001681]: "Pilier cylindrique cantonné de quatre colonnettes et supportant une cuve carrée. [...] 12e siècle". Illustrated in Mémoire [refs.: APMH00079816, APMH00079817]. Oursel (1994) and Drake (2002), and (2003) identify it as related to the fonts at Newenden and Tubersent, all fonts made in the Boulannais workshops. On-site notes: Tournai-type font made of the local ochre limestone known as 'pierre de Marquise'; the square basin sits on a base made of a broad central column and four attached colonnettes at the corners; two of the basin sides have ornamentation: the first contains four individual circles around a rosette, a man with a stick, a lion and a griffin; the next side has also four circles containing an eagle, a lion, a man and an unidentified animal; the next two sides are blank; the capitals of the colonnettes of the base are made of three-leaf motifs that end in little balls; the base ends abruptly in a square plinth without the cushion-bases usually found in the Marquise fonts. [NB: Drake's book (2002: plates 146, 147) has the captions for the fonts at Hedres and Carly reversed]
