Country Name: France

Century and Period: 12th century (late?), Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Marquise font / Boulonnais font
Cognate Fonts: The fonts at Dannes, Condette, Audrehem, Henneveux, Hervelinghem, Saint-Martin-Choquel and others are of this same general type
Listed by Enlart (1902) as a 12th-century Marquise font on a five-support base. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM62000487]: "Pilier cylindrique cantonnée de quatre colonnettes engagées et supportant une cuve quadrangulaire [...] 12e siècle". A fuller and illustrated listing of this font in Palissy [ref.: IM62000682]: "Fonts baptismaux [calcaire (beige)] sur soubassement de plan carré ; cuve en hémisphère aplati à haut rebord de plan et de section carrée, ouverture circulaire [...] 2e moitié 12e siècle"; the stone is described as "calcaire oolithique dit pierre de Marquise". Described in Oursel (1994: 231) as one of the fonts of a general type/design made of a local ochre limestone known as 'pierre de Marquise', although, in this case, it is smeared in a thick dreadful coat of whitewash; others in this group mentioned in Oursel are the fonts at Dannes, Condette, Audrehem, Cormont, Henneveux, Hervelinghem, Saint-Martin-Choquel. On-sitre notes: Square basin mounted on a central column and four detached colonnettes; the latter are very short whereas the leaf-shaped capitals are about 3/4 of the height. The exagerated underbowl (59 cm) makes the font look very chubby and heavy. The vanilla-white coat of thick paint generously applied to the whole font does not help either! The metal font cover is modern.
