INFORMATION

Font ID: 03106LAR
Object Type: Baptismal Font1
Font Century and Period/Style: 15th century [Enlart], Late Medieval
Church / Chapel Name: Église Saint-Mathurin / Basilique Saint-Mathurin de Larchant
Font Location in Church: Inside the church
Church Patron Saint(s): St. Mathurin [aka Maturinus]
Church Notes: The church of Saint-Mathurin (local saint, circa 3rd cent. AD) is dated mostly to the 13th and 14th centuries but Delpal's guide (France, 1985) mentions a 15th century altarpiece, which matches Enlart's dating of the font -- listed in Mériméee [ref.: PA00087053]: "2e moitié 12e siècle ; 14e siècle ; 16e siècle [...] Partiellement ruinée. 18 04 1914 (J.O.)."
Church Address: 77760 Larchant, France
Site Location: Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France, Europe
Directions to Site: Larchant is located off the D16, about 15 km SE of Fontainebleau, about 8 km W of Nemours
Additional Comments: composite font? (the basin and base do not seem to be of the same period and make) -- disappeared font? (the one from the 13thC church here)
Font Notes:
Listed by Enlart (1902) in a group of fonts "en forme de navette" and dated by him to the 15th century. The basin is oval-shaped inside and out, with two plain panels on opposite sides; simple moulding below the upper rim; the octagonal-to-square pedestal base is probably a later replacement. There is no cover present but the upper rim of the basin shows evidence of metal anchorings for an old cover. An octagonal holy-water stoup is located in the south transept, and there is a tub-shaped dodecagonal vessel in the nave of this church identified in the source [cf. ImagesArea] as an ancient holy-water stoup: "ancien bénitier"; its two parts do not seem to work together either, and the basin looks too deep for a stoup.
