Church Notes: Font location unknown. There is a 11th cent. (re-built in the 16th and 17th) abbey church with Romanesque remains among which are two capitals used now as holy water stoup. -- The abbey was founded by the English abbot Gildas and later destroyed by Vikings; the theologian Abelard arrived here in the 12th cent. to force a rule on the unruly monks of St-Gildas but ended up running for his life unable to reform the dissolute community there
Listed in Enlart (1902) as an octagonal font of the Gothic style. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM56002378]: "Fonts baptismaux [...] Granite [...] Cuve octogonale [...] Décor de têtes aux angles [...] 16e siècle [...] H = 95". The font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides, plain but for a moulding at the lower end; chamfered underbowl with at least one human (?) head; raised on a short octagonal stem decorated with mouldings, and an octagonal-to-square lower base with a head (?) at each corner. The cover is a low pyramidal one, octagonal in shape; gilded [or is it metal?]; cross-and-orb finial.
