Font Notes:
In his Notes sur l'art réligieux du Roussillon 2e partie: l'ornementation (Bulletin archéologique du Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques, vol. 11, 1893: 361-362), Brutails mentions a number of ancient fonts, among which "les fonts de Calmeilles présentent une croix ancrée". A font here is listed in Enlart (1902) as one of several unmounted oval ("franchement ovales") fonts of the 11-12th century. A font in this church is listed in Palissy [ref.: PM66000141]: "fonts baptismaux [...] granite [...] Une croix ancrée est sculptée sur la face de la cuve [...] Sans datation". [NB: there appear to be two fonts in this church; the one noted in Enlart [cf. supra] is inside the south open porch located to the right [east] of the south portal, a porch used as a Crucifixion chapel; this font consists of a tub-shaped basin that is plain except for flat moulding below the upper rim; it is raised on a short round base that does not match the basin -- the other font, the one listed in Palissy/Mémoire, is located inside the church; it is tub-like, with a round tapering basin raised on a round pedestal base; the basin is painted and has an anchored cross on the side; this font is much later than the other one]. The font, as illustrated in 1989 in Mémoire [ref.: MHR91_20086600689], was painted in a dark hue, the cross itself a bright red; at present [July 2012] all the paint on the font has been removed, the basin totally re-tooled, polished and re-mounted on a different base, shorter and with a square lower base. The damage to the upper rim is still showing. The cover present in 1989 has been removed, presumably discarded. The font has been installed in a large alcove now fashioned as baptistery. [cf.
