-- Engraved stone was discovered buried under the north aisle; has been dated to the mid-11thC, which corresponds to the original church here; the text is from Luke 23: 42, are the words the penitent thief on the cross speaks to Christ]

Noted in G. Westling's Linköpings domkyrka (1889: p. 5). Noted and illustrated in Fallow (1893) [after Westling], who gives the location of the font as St. Andrew's chapel, near the old demolished sacristy, which was being used as baptistery. Fallow (ibid.) notes that the basin is made of bronze on a stone base, and that there is scene of the Baptism of Christ, and, on the opposite side, one of the Coronation of the Virgin in Heaven in the presence of a crwoned Christ in Majesty; the other sides have pairs of Apostles holding a closed book in their left hand except for John, who holds a chalice, and James, a pilgrim shell; all other Apostles seem to have had an object in their right hand, but they have all been lost; the only other Apostle who is easily identifiable is James the Greater, wearing in pilgrim's garb. Enlart (1902) lists this font among a group of metal fonts on stone bases. Söderberg (1987) makes it a bronze font and dates it to the 15th century. Partially illustrated in Källström (1948: pl. 70), who identifies it as being from a Lübeck workshop; one of the sides of the octagonal (?) basin shows the baptism of Christ in the Jordan, with John the Baptist, on the left, pouring water from a jug over Christ's head while an angel, on the right, waits with the garments in his hands; the scene is housed under a double Ogee arch. [NB: in Bengt Cnattingius et al.'s Linköpings domkyrka (1986: v. 1: 174 and fig. 241) there is a reference to a fragment of a former capital; the fragment was used as the base of the baptismal font at some point, since it had been reported by Brunius in 1849, but it is now lost. -- is this part of the base in the ca. 1893 photograph in Fallow [cf. supra]?]. Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920917F1] as a baptismal font made of bronze of bronze ca, 1400 by a "nordtysk gjutare Lübeck". Noted and illustrated in Ullén & Ljungstedt (2003) noting that the present limestone base was installed in the 1930s. Studied in Källström (2006). There must have been a substantial font cover originally for there are two sides of the basin furnished with large anchoring brackets for the locking hardware: one is on the side right of the Baptism of Christ scene, high above between the two Apostles; the other is on the side with James and Peter (?), to the left of the Baptism scene. There is surviving evidence on the font to indicate that the original base consisted of four supports; the lower rim of the basin is decorated with a frilly pattern all around, but there are four thick L-shaped prongs sticking out on alternated sides, also at the lower end of the basin; these were probably attached to four pillars or, more likely, figures that supported the basin, as is common in this type of font design and period. A modern font designed by Kerstin Barup and executed by Bertil Vallien is in use in the cathedral now.
