Noted in Didron (1859) as a bronze font of the 14th century in the west choir. Listed by Enlart (1902) among a group of metal fonts on stone bases [NB: the base of this font is of metal; only the modern plinth is made of stone]. On-site notes: chalice-shaped baptismal font made of bronze; the basin is roughly hemispherical, with large trefoile-in-a-circle medallion-like panels inscribing the symbols of the four Evangelists and the Baptism of Christ around the underbowl; in the spandrels, full angel figures holding scrolls; there are inscriptions on the many scrolls held by angels, Evangelists' symbols) above these, framed by thin mouldings is a set of arch-heads (pointed outside, trefoiled inside) containg busts of Christ and the Apostles, each identified by his own symbol; foliage motifs in the spandrels of this arcade; the stem of the base, with a large ring moulding, is decorated with tracery patterns of through-work; the lower base splays forming a trefoil arcade with sedente lions at the angles supporting the structure; the metal base appears original but some (two?) of the lions are modern replacements. The font appears to have retained its original cover, round and flat, and locking mechanism; it appears to be either jammed or fixed on purpose so there was no access to the interior during our visit.
