Described in Knight (1867) as "a rich specimen of admirably-sculptured gothic work, which dates from 1455". Lübke (1870) notes a metal font "cast in 1455 by Laurence Groven; it rests on three kneeling angels, and is ornamented with figures in relief of Christ, of Mary, and of the Apostles." Listed by Enlart (1902) among a group of metal fonts with stone bases [was it on a stone base earlier?]. The bronze basin is decorated with an arcade of [13?] crocketed Ogee arches, each containing an apostle or saint (St. Peter gets special treatment with a wider and more ornate arch); above the arcade, a running inscription; the base has a slender central shaft of stone and three outer supports in the shape of kneeling angels. There is another inscription in German around the inner rim of the basin, perhaps a passage from Isaiah (41:10 "Fear thou not; for I am with thee")? This inscription appears to be modern. [NB: the facilities manager informed us during our May 2023 visit that an earlier font had been sold more than 600 years ago to a church in a neighbouring village, but there are neither records nor memory on its name].
