Listed by Enlart (1902) among a few surviving wooden fonts and dated to ca. 1600. Listed in Bond (1908: 77), probably after Enlart. Corblet (1881-1882), who dates it to the 14th century, describes it as a wooden font whose pyramidal lid, which moves on a pivot, is adorned with "incrustations de porphyre égyptien, de vert antique et d'autres marbres précieux." Mathieu Méras, in his entry in the Dictionnaire des églises... (1966- , III B 107-109), mentions a 17th-century font in the baptistery chapel of the Ancienne Collégiale-Saint-Martin at Montpezat-de-Quercy but there is no indication in the entry as to the material, shape or ornamentation. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM82000171] with date in the 18th century. On-site notes: the octagonal basin and lid of this font are indeed made of wood; the upper side of the basin has a protruding rim with large gem-like stones spaced between rosettes; below, on the underbowl, each side has a large palmette framed in foliage. The dome lid is also octagonal but dome and pointed upwards, with a cross finial and medallion-like motifs. Bowl and cover stand on a square stone pedestal. The cover opens sideways swinging on a wooden bracket fixed to the wall behind. Although Faurou and Moureau (1996: 19) write that it is the basin which moves: "la cuve coulisse grâce à une potence placée derrière elle", the pivot is actually affixed to the lid, not the basin [cf. Images section for details]. [NB: all the documentation and photography work on this font had to be done from the outside of the enclosure; the current [June 2001] abbé refused BSI direct access to the font; hence the incomplete data]
