Font Notes:
One of several French fonts made of lead plates welded together and decorated with an arcade on the basin sides. Corblet describes it as a lead font of the 12th century with three registers on its basin sides: the middle, which is dedicated to symbolic images, includes a group of chiefly fabulous animals separated by a tree, in the oriental manner; they are a centaur aiming his bow and arrow to a dragon and a basilisk or manticore; on the other side a lion and a griffin. Corblet includes M. l'abbé Pottier's attribution of these symbolic figures (the centaur is "the Just", the dragon is the Devil, the basilisk is the "esprit du mal", the griffin represents guile and the lion is strength) (Corblet, 1881-1882, v. 2, p. 142); the top band has fleur de lis, rosettes, stars, etc.; the botom band of ornamentation is smaller and has foliage resembling an acanthus vine. Enlart (1902) gives the name of the place simply as Bourret in his first reference and the departement as Haute-Garonne and as Sainte-Croix-de-Bourret in the other. Enlart's second reference, probably an error, makes it 16th century and mortar-shaped. On-site notes: Corblet's description [cf. supra] is quite accurate; the font now stands on a modern cast iron (?) base. Noted and illustrated in Palissy [ref.: PM82000025], with date in the 13th century.
