Described by Enlart (1902: 764) as a Carolingian baptistery, the baptismal font of patriarch Calixtus is octagonal with a ciborium supported by columns; the symbols of the Evangelists are used as ornamentation on one of the sides. Described and illustrated in Bond (1908: 18, 22, 23, 301) as "a baptistery of the eigth century removed in the seventeenth century to the cahedral" and mentions "an altar ciborium as still exists in Cividale" [the "canopy" or arcade mounted on the upper rim of the basin bears the date "MDCXLV", which would roughly correspond to the move to the Duomo. Studied and illustrated in Cosmi de Fanti (1972). Illustrated in Corblet (1881: 31); in Damiani & D'Affara (1998: pl. 131) [NB: note that the illustration in Corblet of ca. 1881 [supra] shows the side of the octagonal font open, whereas it is currently closed, as shown in the recent photograph in D'Affara [supra]]
