Alfred Chevallier's article 'Notes sur quelques fonts baptismaux des Ardennes', in the Revue historique ardennaise, Volum 8 (1901: 303-305) includes the baptismal font at Monthermé: "A Monthermé, la cuve baptismale a la même forme qu à Vendresse. A plate in the same source illustrates a number of them, including that of Monthermé among them. Inventoried and illustrated in [ref.: PA00078468] and Palissy [ref.: PM08000312], with date in the 12th century. Listed in Collin ( 1981) as a notable example of fonts of the Ardennes group of Tournai-like style in the Champagne area. Baptismal font of the characteristic blue-grey local limestone, consisting of a hemispherical basin decorated with four human heads at 90-degree angles on the upper sides; all the heads wear head-dress; the inner well is lined; it is raised on a plain cylindrical pedestal. The metal cover is dome-shaped with a finisl; there are two metal anchors at opposite ends of the upper rim to secure cover.
