Font Century and Period/Style: 17th century(mid), Renaissance

Church / Chapel Name: Église paroissiale de Notre-Dame de Lampaul-Guimiliau
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, at the W end, under a large baldaquin
Church Patron Saint(s): St. Mary the Virgin
Church Notes: At the back, western end of the church, there is a large sarcophagus-like container whose basin has a drain hole. This container stands on legs obviously borrowed from some un-related object. The irregular structure and the shape suggests a water trough rather than a baptismal font and is therefore not included in BSI.

Site Location: Finistère, Bretagne, France, Europe
Directions to Site: Lampaul-Guimiliau is just E of the D69, SE of Landivisiau, 27 km S of Roscoff, and not far the sites for the other canopied fonts (Sizun, Commana, etc.)
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocèse de Quimper
Historical Region: Pays de Landivisiau
Additional Comments: recycled font?: sarcophagus-like container whose basin has a drain hole; could have been a trough also

On-site notes: this granite octagonal double font has a constructional smaller second basin, also octagonal, with its own separate round base; the base of the main basin is also octagonal. There is a crenellated band under the rim below which there is an inscription with includes the date in which the font was made, 1651. The underbowl has rosette motif ornamentation; the bases have blind arcade motif. The colourful baldaquin, the work of G. Carquain, 1650, -according to the church Visitor's guide- has eight colonnettes which support the roof; the latter has several levels and is crowded with ornamentation which the above-mentioned guide identifies as the Baptism of Christ, the 12 Apostles and an angel holding a tunic (copy of "Visitor's guide" in BSI archive)
