Church Notes: 16th-17thC church listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00089888]
The baldaquin housing this font is listed in Palissy [ref.: PM29000154]: "Église Saint-Derrien [...] Baldaquin des fonts baptismaux [...] 1682 [...] Bois [...] H = 900 (hauteur approximative) [...] Il est supporté par cinq statues, la Foi, l'Epérance, la Charité, la Tempérance et la Justice [...] On connaît le nom du sculpteur Douaré Aillot de Recouvrance, qui semble avoir travaillé pour la marine royale [...] Oeuvre restaurée en 2009 par l'Atelier Le Ber." Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: AP29W01192]. On-ste notes: the font has two constructional basins, the second one much smaller and looking more like an appendix, although it does have its own base, a round colonnette. The main basin is round with a few mouldings around the sides; in between these there is an inscription [cf. Inscription]; the underbowl has ribs with arch-like tops. The base is cylindrical and has ornamentation matching the ribs of the underbowl. The lower base is round at two levels. The ornamentation of the small basin is similar and includes a date, "1656", carved in the gaps between the tops of the ribs. The most striking, and interesting, appeal of this font is in the baldaquin which houses it, a beautiful 17th century work done by Réné Alliot [cf. infra] of Brest in 1683 [date visible on the baldaquin]. The finial of the baldaquin is Christ holding the cross standing on a baldaquin roof held by two angels (it houses a cleric/saint (?)); five columns support the roof, a statue of virtue at each: 1)Faith, 2)Temperance, 3)Charity, 4)Hope and 5)Justice, each holding its distinctive symbol; the ceiling of the canopy has a depiction of the Baptism of Christ. The Dictionnaire des églises... (1966- ) gives the name of the sculptor of the baldaquin as Honoré Alliot de Recouvrance.
