Church Notes: church listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00080633]: "15e siècle"
An illustration in Malle (1994) shows a tub-like font with a tall wooden cover of a later period (the wooden cover is described as High Gothic by Enlart, 1902); a Greek pattée cross, a Moon symbol, a human face, a six-point star and Christ's anagram can be seen in the short arches under the rim; Malle mentions also some coats of arms. The lower part of the basin sides is not ornamented and tapers in to join the stumpy octagonal base with a tore. A wider plinth supports the whole font. The font cover appears octagonal , of the "cupboard" type in the lower part and a tall pyramidal upper part. Malle reports the date 1518 and the initials F.R.D.F. on it and reads them as "François, Roi de France" (Malle, 1994). Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM05000331]: "Cuve monolithe à décor sculpté [...] A news regarding the cover doors appeared in the Sepptember 2024 edition of the Vallouise Magazine [http://www.vallouise.info/archives/nouvelles-01.htm#Vallouise_:_les_fonts_baptismaux] [accessed 12 May 2024]: "Vallouise : les fonts baptismaux de l'église munis de nouveaux panneaux (Juillet 2004). Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: AP05W01134] On-site notes: we were shocked to find the doors of the beautiful font cover missing at the time of our visit [June 26, 2001]; we later found out that the church was broken into on the night of July 7-8 1998 and the doors of the font cover torn from the frame and stolen [obviously a "by order" theft]. An image of the missing doors is available at the Inventaire Général des Monuments et des Richesses Artistiques de la France [we will try to obtain a copy for the Index; in the meantime, we have provided an image as reproduced on a drawing inside the church]. One of the motifs under the arcade is a map of the region; another has the monogram of Jesus. Some of these motifs are reproduced also on an external freeze of the church. Although the font design and its measurements would suggest an early date (13th or 14th century), some of the motifs are represented in heraldic format, which would prompt us for a later dating (15th or 16th century). Since the lid itself is dated by an inscription to 1518, would it be posible that font and cover are contemporary?
