Vivier-Seguin (1941) describe the lines on the basin making very large angles as representing the letters "A" and "W". Noted in Malle (1994) who suggests the base may be of a later date than the basin. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM50001169]: "Granite, granite : décor en bas-relief [...] La cuve est de forme quadrangulaire, décorée sur chaque face. [...] H = 83 ; l = 81 ; la = 79 [...] 12e siècle". On-site notes: the basin is shaped like an upside-down truncated pyramid with a human (?) face at each upper corner; the arris are rounded. The basin is crudely made of rough granite; the base has four colums added to the broad central cylindrical pedestal; the colonnettes of the base have retained their bases but have had their capitals broken off; there have been rough repairs done to the upper rim of the basin; the general state of the basin is poor, with a green mould developing on its surface.
