Country Name: Spain
Location: Pontevedra, Galicia
Directions to Site: The "parroquia" of San Miguel de Pexegueiro is a village of ca. 400 inhabitants located in the place known as Mosteiro, in the municipality of Tui, 6 km from Tui, 50 km from Pontevedra capital, on the northern banks of the rio Miño.
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocesis de Tui-Vigo
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, by the N wall, near a long bench
Century and Period: 12th century (late?), Romanesque
Credit and Acknowledgements: We are grateful to Carlos Sastre and to Augusto Guedes de Castro for their photographs and information on this font
Church Notes: Carlos Sastre [personal letter in BSI files] mentions a "Cristo articulado" [=articulated Christ] and compares the font decoration to that of the church's tympanum over the western entrance, in which can be found both the hemispheres and the same type of animal carving. Sastre lso questions whether or not the font figures might represent Daniel and the lions (ibid.)
Described in the Enciclopedia del Románico en Galicia (2014- ), with measurements, identifying the figures as a lion, an atalante and a horse. Described and ilustrated in Romanico Digital [www.romanicodigital.com/cedar/pila-bautismal-69952.aspx] [accessed 9 August 2016] after the Enciclopedia entry. Noted and illustrated in Carlos Prieto [http://lamagiadelaspiedras.blogspot.ca/2014/10/pila-bautismal-de-san-miguel-de.html] [accessed 9 August 2016], also after the entry in the Enciclopedia. The tub-shaped granite font has a squat, narrower base which appears to form a single block with the basin; the upper part of the basin has a row of hemispheres just below the rim, probably 18-24; under it, a plain horizontal band; another such, parallel to this right at the bottom of the basin; three crudely carved figures adorn the granite surface between the bands: in the centre, a figure (male?) with arms raised (orant?), both his hands and his feet carved over the corresponding band, upper and lower; to his right, facing away from him, a quadruped (lion?); to his left, facing him, another quadruped, certainly not a lion, its hooves showing three "fingers". A drain -with a modern tap- has been effected in the lower side of the basin, under the lion's belly. The whole has been mounted, probably quite recently, on a modern plinth.
