Pike (1989) reports a plain basin outside the Killala "Cathedral"; the Phaidon guide to Gt. Britain and Ireland dates the actual church to 1670, but there is a 12th century tower nearby and St. Patrick founded a monastery here for bishop Muiredagh in the 5th century (Mehling, 1985)
