Font Notes:
Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. In Walker (1908), who points out that the outer colonnnettes of the base are a replacement [cf. VCH entry infra]. Harrison (1920) dates the font to the late-Norman period. Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a baptismal font of the Norman period; a square basin mounted on a broad central column and four outer colonnettes; the sides of the basin are ornamented with an arcade and with rosettes. In Drummond-Roberts (1935). The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 5, pt. 1, 1997) notes: "There was a church in 1086. [...] In 1105 the lord of Barnham, Robert de Haye, gave it to Lessay abbey (Manche) [...] The nave is 12th-century and the rear arch of the south doorway and two small windows are of that date. The chancel was built, presumably to replace a smaller unit, early in the 13th century [...] The square late 12th-century font of Sussex marble has badly rubbed decoration including foliage and arcading; its central supporting pillar is original but the outer four are apparently painted drainpipes", the latter detail footnoted to Walker [cf. supra]. Whiteman (1998) writes: "The Norman font is a square bowl of Sussex marble with traces of decorative arcading". Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008) with date in the late 12th century. [NB: we have no information on the font from the ca. 1086 chuch here].
