There is an entry for this Barcombe [variant spelling] in the Domesday [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TQ4214/barcombe/] [accessed 26 March 2015]; it mentions a church in it. A font here is listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Decorated period. Harrison (1920) notes a baptismal font of the 14th century here, "of a local type resembling that of Willingdon". Described in the Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 7, 1940): "The church of St. Mary [...] was built in c. 1100 and of this date the north wall remains. [...] The font is of 14th-century date, having a square bowl with traceried sides, and square pedestal with attached shafts". Described in Whiteman (1998): "The font (14th-century) has a square bowl carved with patterns of arches and crosses" [NB: the 'crosses' referred to here are the pair of quatrefoils inscribed in circles]. Noted and illustrated in the Roughwood British Churches Album [http://www.roughwood.net/ChurchAlbum/EastSussex/Barcombe/Barcombe2003.htm] [accessed 20 February 2010]: "The font is a good example of 14th century work and is said to be of "a local type" similar to the one in Willingdon. Its four sides are differently carved in plain, but striking, patterns." One side has a pair of encircled quatrefoils; another has four trefoiled arches. The 'Statement of significance' published locally [www.barcombe.net/church/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/statement-of-significance-0908.doc.] [accessed 20 February 2010] by the Parish in 2009, states: "Half way down the south aisle is the 14th Century Font. It was moved to this place away from the main door in 1970s. Whilst everyone acknowledges it to be a peculiar place for the font no one can easily find a better place." [NB: we have no information on the font of the ca.1100 church here].
