Scene Description: Source caption: "St.Mary the Virgin, Apuldram. Standing in the midst of fields close to Chichester Harbour, this small Grade I listed church is of a simple rectangular design dating from the 12th century. It was almost entirely rebuilt in the 13th century when a south aisle was added to the nave. A south porch was built in the 15th century and a vestry and heating chamber erected on the north side of the nave in the 19th century."

Scene Description: Source caption: "The font, a square bowl of Purbeck marble and dating back to the 12th century, stands on five shafts, of which only the central shaft is original. It has suffered from exposure to the weather, perhaps taken outside by the Cromwellian soldiers. It was presumably replaced at the restoration of the monarchy in 1661 and moved to its present position in 1867."

No entry found for Apuldram in the Domesday survey. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Noted in Harrison (1920) as late-Norman. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953) notes: "The font is of Purbeck marble, having a square basin ornamented with shallow round-arched arcading; it rests on five shafts (all but the centre one being modern renewals). It is of the 12th century, and shows signs of having been at one time exposed to the weather, perhaps in the era of the Commonwealth." The local church guide by Steer (1965) [cf. infra]. Described in Whiteman (1998): "Square Norman font has carved shallow arcading". Catalogued and illustrated in The Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland (2008) with date for the basin only in the 12th century; the stem and outer colonnettes are noted as modern: "The font is of a type widespread in Sussex and difficult to date within the 12thc./early 13thc. Steer maintained that the central shaft is original (Steer 1965, 3)." The Chichester Harbour Conservancy website [http://www.conservancy.co.uk/page/Villages/351/] [accessed 20 July 2010] notes: "The original church was built c.1100 AD and whilst still belonging to the College of Bosham, was reconstructed about 1250 AD. Building restoration, carried out in 1877, was extensive [...] and the font moved to its present position, supported by 4 new pedestal shafts. The old central shaft is medieval and the font itself is 12th Century." [cf. supra] Noted in Leach (1975) as a basin made of Purbeck marble on modern replacement outer colonnettes.
