Font Notes:
Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Harrison (1920) notes a restored baptismal font originally of the late-Norman period. Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an early square basin mounted on a broad central column and four slender corner colonnettes, and ornamented with a blind arcade around the sides. Listed in Tyrrell-Green (ibid.) with a group of Norman-period fonts on which "the arcading is rather rudely represented by a succession of shallow sunk panels with semicircular heads [...] the only adornment" of the basin. Whiteman (1998) writes: "The Norman font is square with shallow arcading". Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008), which reports: "a square Sussex marble font with upright sides, each carved with four round-headed arches. The lower edge is chamfered. There are various cracks and inserts on the bowl, which is damaged to N and E. The bowl rests directly on a modern slab, which is upheld by a thick central shaft (containing the drain) and four angle shafts. These are modern, and have no capitals or bases. The two superimposed chamfered plinths are also modern."
