Chalice-shaped baptismal font at the former "convento" [=monastery] of San Bernardino de Sena, today a museum of the Distrito Federal. The hemispheric basin has four large leaves, reaching from the underbowl to the upper rim; alternating with these, four eight-leaf flowers; at the upper rim, except where interrupted by the large leaves, a knotted rope motif. The base is conical with two large roll mouldings at the bottom, right above the joint with the square lower base, both of which are otherwise plain. [We are grateful to Mónica Domínguez for the image and her permission to reproduce it here - 30 November 2001]. Illustrated in James (2001: fig. 72 on p. 144) whose photograph includes a skull on the pillar to which the font cover is chained: "an Aztec skull presides over a font in the great church of Xochimilco" [NB: the "cover" is actually a metal plate that fits inside the basin well]. Noted and illustrated by Adriana Boggio-Harasymowicz in La Palabra y el Hombre: Revista de la Universidad Veracruzana (3a epoca, no. 12) [www.uv.mx/lapalabrayelhombre/12/contenido/arte/Ar1/articulo3.html] [accessed 6 October 2016]. [NB: a second font in this church is listed in this Index as Xochimilco No. 3]
