Although both the basin and the base are from about the same period (1671 and 1650 respectively), they were originally two very different objects: the base, dated to 1650, and made by master Hinrich Lambrecht of Hamburg, was probably the foot of a wash basin. The wide and very shallow basin, made by master Christian Mundt of Hamburg, has plain sides but a very broad and ornate rim; in the inner side of the basin, on the bottom itself, a relief of the Baptism of Christ. An engraved inscription records the names of the princes of the realm baptized in it, for this is Denmark's royal font (source: Wilkenschildt, 1999). A 30 June 2007 article in HOLA [http://www.hola.com/realeza/2007/06/30/pila-juego-bautismal/] [accessed 20 July 2008] informs that the font was first used in 1671, and that it was kept at Copenhagen Slot until 1720, since which date it has been kept at Rosenborg Slot. This same source (ibid.) informs that baptisms using this font are not carried out at a particular church, and that the font is carried to the baptismal venue as needed.
