Font Notes:
This baptismal font, now in the parish church of Albendiego, came originally from the Ermita de Santa Colomba [Coloma?]; it has, above the ribs, a band of ornamentation; a rope motif at the end of the basin where it meets the base; the base is also ribbed. Doubts raised by the authors regarding the Romanesque pedigree of this and several other fonts; they argue that these could possibly have been done by a local hand (later in the Middle Ages) following the local style (Ruiz Montejo, 1992) [NB: correction received on March 6, 2003 from the local priest: Albendiego has no baptismal font]. Noted and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla-La Mancha: Guadalajara (2009), as a font of the late Romanesque period originally from the Iglesia of Santa Coloma, just outside the village. Baptismal font consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a moulding at the upper rim, followed down by a row of scallops and a ribbed pattern below; raised on a moulded stem and a round lower base. There is damage to the upper rim where one of the metal staples of the old cover still is in place.
Credit and Acknowledgements: We are grateful to the parish priest at Albendiego and to Marcos Nieto, of Sigüenza, Spain, for their help in documenting this font
