Milmarcos

Monolithic baptismal font of Romanesque design [cf. infra], but perhaps as late as the mid-16th century, if it matches the date of the church itself; it is round, with vertivcal sides and a hemispherical underbowl; the sides are decorated with niches that are carved around stylised human figures with nimbed heads, except one of the niches, which inscribes a baculum; the underbowl, in contrast with the smooth polished surface of the upper sides, is rough. The basin appears to rest directly on the ground, but it is possible that there is a squat lower base now buried in the flooring. The Romanesque pedigree of the font at Milmarcos is, according to Ruiz Montejo (1992), debatable; it is, however, generaly accepted as medieval; the basin has a blind arcade, except that one arch contains what appears to be a baculum.
