Church Notes: 12thC church; modified 17thC; damaged by fire 20thC -- some sources give the dedication as the Annunciation -- good photo essay on this church done in 2009 in http://www.aldeaglobal.net/alu510/castella/Guadalajara/Pinilla de Jadraque.htm [accessed 15 August 2020] -- good brief description in https://www.arteguias.com/guadalajara/jadraquepinillajadraque.htm [accessed 15 August 2020]
Described and illustrated in Ruiz Montejo (1992): a Romanesque font with a large cylindrical basin; the outer surface has very thick ribs; the base is a short roughly cylindrical pedestal, plain. Although no cover is found on the font at present, the upper rim still shows one of the metal staples of the old cover in place. The Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla-La Mancha: Guadalajara (2009) reports a baptismal font of the 17th century in this church, in an alcove located at the W end of the covered gallery [NB: not clear why the Enciclopedia… dates this font to the 17th century, as it appears to be a Romanesque font well in keeping with the local styles and designs (unless there is second font in the church and this one is not mentioned?; the original church is Romanesque, but it was renovated in the 17th century, the font quite likely a left-over from the 13th-century church]. [NB: the ruins of the early-13th century Cistercian monastery/convent of San Salvador are located nearby; we have no information on the baptismal font of its church]. The present [August 2020] location of the font is inside the church; it had been, as indicated above, in the covered gallery or porch, where some photographs taken in February 2004 show it; photographs of 2009 show the font still in the porch in 2009; a 2014 visitor reported to BSI that he did not find the font in the porch; we now [August 2020] have photographs that show the font inside the church.
